Heavier Chevy 
| | The answer came to me in the shower last Thursday morning. I knew exactly what kind of car the Ultimate Linux Laptop would need to be. The answer was filling the parking lot right there at the hotel where I was staying. That lot demonstrated Searls' First Law of Renting Cars, which goes like this — "It doesn't matter what kind of car you want you want to rent. The car you'll get is a Chevy Cavalier." |

Adjustments
| | The flight was beautiful. I saw Iceland from the air for the first time — a profusion of snowcapped volcanoes, some with vast glaciers melting to braided rivers carrying fresh alluvium down to the Atlantic. Greenland and Labrador were spectacular as usual, as was the Davis Straight between them, broken into huge ice floes. After that, the land was covered by clouds almost to North Dakota, and then clear for nearly the duration, except for the Bighorn, Wind River and Uintah ranges. Cloud Peak in the Wind Rivers seemed suitably named. Even Los Angeles was remarkably clear, although scattered high brown clouds testified to a wildfire somewhere. (With the Winter so dry, a long fire season is upon us early.) I'll put up pictures later if I have time (which is doubtful). |
| | After we began our descent just west of Las Vegas, my nose told me we were approaching the Pacific. For some unknown reason, my nose runs here. This time it was like a faucet, and it hasn't let up. In fact, right now is about the worst it's ever been. I'll try to get to a doctor sometime later today, but I have little faith in any remedy. I've tried a raft of them. I'm allergic to paradise, I guess. |
| | Got home to find the street undermined by a water main break. Workers were up all night out front, making a huge noise while repairing it. Good job, though. We have water again this morning. |
| | Just went for email, and it's pulling down 600 messages. At leat 90% spam, I'm sure. |
