A Blanche DuBois Moment
| | So the Port City Java here in Southport doesn't have wi-fi yet. "Next week sometime." They suggested the library. All they had there were Ethernet jacks. Not clear. The librarian called them "wall sockets" or something. So I decided to drive up to Wilmington. But on my way out of town I kept the laptop open and the stumbler on, set to vocalize the names of SSIDs it passed. One said "Law." Sure enough, a law office in a little house had an open connection. I asked them for a cup of packets, and here I am, able to get a little bit of work done in their conference room. Nice. |
| | Now, back to the vacation in progress... |
Taking it slower
| | We're here in Oak Island, NC. They used to call it Long Beach (which it is), but Oak Island sounds nicer. There must be an Oak around here somewhere. |
| | Anyway, it took forever to get here on Saturday. The drive to L.A. at 4am wasn't bad. Two hours or so. The first flight was nice until we parked in the sky over the Blue Ridge while a thunderstorm stopped traffic at Dulles. When we landed, the jetway didn't work for about 20 minutes. Then we (the kid, lots of carry-ons and I) hauled ass to the farthest possible gate, and made it to the other plane just as the door was closing. Then that plane, with no working ventilation, sat still for another 20 minutes waiting for a take-off opening (weather again). It had to be 95 degrees in there. After that flight, one of our two bags (the kid's) failed to arrive, which took another hour to work out. Then we rented a car in slow motion and drove three house to the beach from Raleigh-Durham. At one point the kid, who was stir-crazy past the breaking point, sat screaming in the back seat: SIX WORDS!! I CAN'T STAND THIS ANY MORE!!! EIGHT WORDS!! STOP THE CAR AND LET ME OUT OF HERE! He's into numbers, the kid. |
| | Anyway, we got to see the moon setting over the Pacific and rising over the Atlantic. And it's nice here at the beach. The kid loves the warm water (at least 80°) and has no fear of the bigger waves, which scares me. He boogie-boarded all Sunday. |
| | Went wardriving with my sister late yesterday hoping to find an open hot spot. We're guardedly optimistic about the new Port City Java place in Southport. It was closed but seemed to be putting out a wi-fi signal, though not one I could get on. |
| | Anyway, now it's 4:30am Monday and I just got dial-up to work past the phone system, which is typical of rental places here. I won't bore you with the detail, except to say it's unfriendly and expensive. |
| | I am so spoiled by broadband. Lordy. |
| | If yours is among the 435 emails that just came down, be patient. |
