Emnity's List
| | Over at the AOTC blog is Worst Coders in Washington, a very handy list of all the legislators who have demonstrated hostility to the Net with their lawmaking. Also noted is how much money they've taken from Net-hostile contributors. |
| | It's an important list. As far as I know, it's the first of its kind. |

Surf's up
| | Went out last night to Soho, a local pub/restaurant/club, to hear The Duotones, which consist of Paul Johnson and Mike Orr, guitarists who have been playing in the soundtrack of our lives since the early 60s. They've been fixtures in the Belairs, the Surfaris and the Chantays all landmark surf music bands, with hits like Wipeout, Pipeline and Mr. Moto. |
| | They played acoustic guitars, showcasing the original surf music style in an unexpectedly pure way. I heard so much that had never been apparent before. A strong Spanish influence, for example. There was a sweet irony to the performance as well, since the electric surf style is in the direct ancestry of metal and punk. |
| | I had also forgotten how much I've always loved the surf sound, and how many memorable instrumentals belong to the genre, or are at least close relatives. |
| | The song list included Pipeline, Baja, Baja nights, Walk don't run, The Lonely Bull, Perfidio, Penetration, Last Date, California Dreamin', Forty Miles of Bad Road, Caravan, Pipeline and others I can't remember right now. Beautifully done, and a lot of fun. |
| | We even brought along our six-year old kid, who has probably heard Baja (the version by the Astronaunts) fifty times already. Even though he fell asleep by the end of the show, he loved it too. Great music has that effect. |
| | The Duotones will be at Henfling's Firehouse Tavern in Ben Lomond on Wednesday, and on KPIG sometime between now and then. If you're in the Bay Area, check these guys out. |
