Working with stoned tools
So I'm sitting here on a bed in an old motel, where we've finally figured out how to dial past the PBX: hook up the room phone in parallel with the laptop through a Y splitter and dial 8 and 1 manually, leaving the next 10 digits up to the computer. It's all very trial-and-error, because the PBX times out quickly if nothing happens immediately after the 8 and the 1, and the laptop takes about 20 seconds to start connecting after the Connect command is sent. (I hate that... is there any reason in 2002 that a new laptop should have to think so damn long just to do something simple?)
Anyway, it doesn't work if the phone goes back on the hook, so the receiver is laying on a pillow, whispering modem hash into the fiberfill.
I'm on at 19.8kbps and it seems to be holding. Wonderful.
Just went for an email run. There were 493 messages, mostly spam. I reset the client to reject messages over 5k, but things aren't happening much faster. Arg.
Anyway, here's a request. We've got three family members here with laptops, looking for some kind of Ethernet or wi-fi connection in Monmouth County, New Jesey. So far, we've found nothing. Not at book stores, not at any of the Starbucks (one said "None of the Starbucks in New Jersey have it"), none anywhere. But I'm sure it's around, somewhere If you know any, post it in the Discuss section (links below and to the left).A whole buncha Searls will appreciate it.
Thanks!
