Tune in, blog on
| | I'm getting all these pointers to David Weinberger's commentary about weblogs on NPR's All Things Considered this evening. More here. |
Whack on
The mole of truth
Xell
| | For a month or so everything was hunky with OS X. But for the last few days I've been in hell. The machine hangs. I can't bring up a terminal. Even the three-finger salute that brings up the force quit dialog doesn't work. I can only restart. At first this damaged nothing obvious. Then a crash yesterday destroyed my Palm desktop database. Today it did something awful to my mail. |
| | I don't suppose it's coincidental that both Eudora and Palm Desktop are beta programs. I'd avoid them, but using the classic version of Eudora is slow under OS X, and the classic version of the Palm Desktop doesn't work at all there. And the OS X native beta versions of both worked fine for about two weeks, so I'm not even sure they're the problem. |
| | Fortunately my Handspring Visor backed up my Palm base. And I have Eudora backed up to just before the trip. But the backup is back at home and I found myself here a few minutes ago, facing a prompt asking me if I wanted to rebuild my In box. In past experience this always caused trouble. But this time the program was more insistent in it's warning that I would lose mailif I didn't rebuild, so I said yes. Big mistake. The rebuild took forever before announcing that 1000 out of 27000 summaries were saved, whatever that means. The result: most of the dates are wrong. It's a mess. |
| | If you sent me something recently (or plan to send something soon) good luck. It's going to be awhile before I sort this out, if I can at all. And I have meetings to go to. |
Well-spent, apparently
| | Says here Microsoft's lobbying budget exceeded Enron's for the same period. |
Miniblogging
| | Quietly, at the back of the during a long meeting at a conference, I pause while answering email and writing overdue articles to point quietly but emphatically to the latest JOHO. Included: Dr. Weinberger's Inside Story on Googlewhacking, which I shoulda read before fucking up my belated first efforts yesterday. |
