Belated thanks
... for all the emails offering advice for getting Joyce's old Mac running. Also my laptop, which crapped out before the trip. The trick with Joyce's box was loading nothing but System 8.6 and then adding the few extensions needed for base functionality, then rinse and repeat. Now it works, but the Net strips its gears. What I thought was just a slow line was really just a slow browser. And sites with lots of Javascript like Live365 don't work at all. Never did, I guess. Joyce isn't as demanding as I am, so she never stretched the envelope.
Think we'll give this laptop to her, and the old Mac (an 8100/100AV) to Jeffrey. It runs all the educational software he likes best (and was written years ago -- even the "new" stuff gives you a choice of registering over modem or fax). I'll get a new laptop. Probably one of those Titanium guys. Make it a dual-boot with Linux and run Windows under VirtualPC.
Lotta money, though. I also need a car.

Just found one working phone outlet here in the new office space, and jacked the laptop into it. Down came 61 emails. Fewer than I expected, which is good. There isn't much I can do. There's a painter working next to me while I sit here with the laptop on my lap. Not safe.
It'll be a day or two before we get the bandwidth installed. Joyce is out rounding up heavy-duty extension cables and power strips. I count at least twenty things that need to be plugged in.
It's beautiful outside. Warm, breezy. Nice. I see it's also pretty back at the old place too.
Gotta fold this thing up and continue unpacking boxes.
