A perfect conference
It's Day Two of the Pop!Tech Conference in Camden, Maine, and I'm ready to call it the best conference I have ever attended. When I gave that opinion to Joyce over the phone, she said "was anybody selling anything?" The answer was no. (No vendor presentations, no breakouts...) That might be one reason why.
I don't know the whole history of the conference, and I don't have time to go into it now. Look around the site to get an sense of it.
I wish I had more time to write about what's happening there. In the interest of log-rolling with my local weblog friends, I will say that Dan Gillmor did a thoughtful and humorous job moderating a terrific panel on "Being Human and the Machine," with Ellen Ullman and Patty Maes. I've loved reading Ellen's work in Salon and elsewhere, and she didn't disappoint me as a speaker. I wish I had taken better notes,so I could share some of her one-liners. Also those of Maine governor Angus King (the "other" independent gov), Ira Glasser, John Perry Barlow, Whit Diffie, Meg Smith, Mary Furlong and others. Their links are all on the title page.
Meanwhile, it you can, make the effort to watch the live streaming video of the conference. I can't think of a better way to spend a hour or two over the next two days.
By the way, you can also follow the proceedings, with complete speeches (like this one by JPB) and surrounding stories, on the local Camden "station" (people call it that): camden.k2bh.com. Pretty nice, huh? These guys do a great job.
