"On the Web, mindshare is a function of interconnection," writes Jon Udell in Measuring Web Mindshare, at Byte.com. Seems like a good corollary to Dr. Weinberger's "Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy" (Thesis #7 from The Cluetrain Manifesto). Mr. Udell uses a piece of little-known advanced Altavista search syntax to discover the number of inbound links to a site. It's pretty cool, especially when the results are compliled across a list of sites, as we see in his Mindshare Report.
Udell's Byte columns, by the way, are a fount of wisdom and sobriety. And he's extremely conversational in his approach to following the threads of his boundless curiousity. Even if you're not a techie, follow Udell's nose as he works his way toward answers to the question, Why Isn't ODBC a Standard Feature of Linux? Terrific research, vivid writing. Most clueful, indeed.
By the way, the lead to Udell's work came from Bernie Thompson of CoSource.com, a cooperative market for open source developers. The idea behind CoSource is profoundly clueful: provide a place a true marketplace where those who need or sell open source development can find each other and do business together.
